Orange juice – the quintessential breakfast drink, is tasty, healthy, full of zing, energy, and helps to kick start our day in the right way. We all know this, but many of us are be riddled with questions like, what diseases does orange juice help prevent, how much calories does it provide, what all nutrients are present in orange juice, does it help in reducing weight, and many more. Health Benefits of Orange

Orange juice is the unfermented liquid extract from orange fruits. It is one of the richest sources of vitamin C, antioxidants, minerals, and many other nutrients. To understand the health benefits derived from orange juice we need to understand the nutritional composition of orange juice first.

It is evident from the above table that orange juice is one of the riches sources of Vitamin C and other nutrients with anti oxidant properties; and provides very little calories too. The health promoting benefits of orange juice come from these very nutrients. I have discussed each disease or condition where orange juice is beneficial in detail below:

Scurvy and gingivitis: Both these conditions are caused by Vitamin C deficiency. Orange juice being one of the richest sources of Vitamin C and a good source of other B vitamin is the most natural preventive and curative food for this condition.

Common cold:  Common cold is caused by thousands of little viruses. Orange juice is full of Vitamin C, minerals and antioxidants that boost our immune system and help fight out these viruses. Also the high water content of orange juice will help to keep you hydrated and fresh.

Diarrhea: Dehydration is the major complication of diarrhea and vomiting. Orange juice is an excellent oral rehydration solution (ORS). It is rich in fluids, electrolytes (sodium and potassium), and other trace elements. Orange juice is also known to have an anti-emetic effect (i.e. prevent vomiting). 

Coronary heart diseases: Many studies have proved that regular consumption of orange juice can prevent progression of coronary heart diseases. Orange juice is rich in flavonoids, anti oxidants like selenium, and anti-inflammatory nutrients like folic acid, which help reduce bad cholesterol, and curb the progression of arterial damage.

Orange juice contains many anti-oxidant and anti inflammatory agents like carotenoids, terpenes, flavonoids, folate, and others. As a virtue of these components many studies have proved its role in preventing conditions like asthma, bronchitis, atherosclerosis, impotence, pancreatic cancer, and kidney stones. However, one must realize that all these health benefits depend majorly upon the source of the juice. Packaged, frozen, or dry powdered juices are usually filled with preservatives, additives, and sugar, which many a times nullify the health benefits of orange juice. Moreover, since many of the nutrients present in orange juice are highly sensitive and destroyed easily, the processing and preservation of the juice ends up destroying these nutrients. Hence, orange juice does prevent several disease conditions, but only if consumed fresh with no added additives.
