The disease of breast cancer is on the rise. In the world annually has about 2 million newly diagnosed cases of breast cancer and the number of deaths per year is half million. The good news is that breast cancer detected at an early stage is considered potentially curable.

Although the disease occurs most often in women in the age group of 45 to 49 and 55 to 59 years, more often breast cancer is diagnosed in young girls. Therefore, it is important to begin by taking measures for protection from a young age.

Prevent Breast Cancer

WAYS TO PREVENT BREAST CANCER

Here’s how you can reduce your risk of breast cancer and save the health of your breasts:

1. Maintain healthy body weight, especially after menopause. Overweight in women is associated with increased risk of breast cancer. Is considered that obesity increases the risk of breast cancer by 40%. And not only that. Women who are overweight have a much harder fight against breast cancer after diagnosing. Keep the body mass index (BMI) below the 25. But don’t just watch the numbers on the scale. Regularly measure your waist. Do not let waist circumference reach more than 80cm.

2. Reduce to a minimum consumption of alcohol. The more alcohol you drink, the more you increase the risk of breast cancer. Research shows that drinking two alcoholic drinks per day increases the risk by 21%. It is best to drink alcohol only on special occasions. If you have decided every day to drink alcohol, do not drink more than one cup.

3. Make physical activity a priority. Regular exercise helps to maintain a normal weight, strengthens the immune system and reduces estrogen levels (high level of this hormone is associated with increased risk of breast cancer). Exercise 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week. If you don’t like the gym, choose walking. But it should not be an ordinary slow walk in the park, but should maintain a moderate pace. Exercise can also help women who already have breast cancer better to bear the side effects of therapy and to recover faster after surgery.

4. Consider your family history. Women whose family has or had the case with breast cancer are at higher risk. A high-risk group are women whose closest have suffered from breast cancer (mother or sister). Talk openly with your family and mandatory tell your doctor about the occurrence of breast cancer in any of your closest. It can change his recommendations for the age at which you should start screenings.

5. Do not replace breastfeeding with formula milk. Women who breastfeed her baby reduces the risk of breast cancer. The longer you breastfeed your baby, the bigger is the protective effect. Breastfeed your baby at least six months.

6. Increase your intake of vitamin D. Vitamin D is not only good for strengthening bones and to enhance immunity. Studies show that it can reduce the probability of breast cancer.

7. Take care of your nutrition. Reduce consumption of red meat, because it is believed that increase the risk of breast cancer. Replace red meat with chicken or seafood. Eat fruits and vegetables before pastries and cooked meats too. It is recommended to eat 5 portions of fruit or vegetables daily. Enrich your diet with: broccoli, olive oil, salmon, beans and nuts.

8. Do regular breast examinations. The above measures only reduce risk, but, unfortunately, does not protect completely. Secondary prevention, i.e. detecting cancer at an early stage is of utmost importance. The sooner cancer is diagnosed, the easier it can be cured.

  • Breast self-exam. It is recommended to do a breast self – exam once a month, starting from the 20s. The best time to do a breast self – exam is 3-5 days after the menstrual period.
  • Breast cancer mammogram. The most commonly recommended first mammography to be done around the 40th year. Women aged between 40 and 50 years should do mammography every 2 years. After the 50th year, mammography should be done every year.

And do not forget, it’s never too early or too late for changes. No matter whether you have 15, 25 or 55 years. Change your life to enjoy good health.
